Manjimup Truffle Field Study Tour (Industry Event)

18 to 26 June 2018

An immersive and educational field study tour of the truffle industry developing in Manjimup, the heart of Australian truffle country. 


Participants will acquire a strong appreciation of the application of science to truffle production. Participants will understand the way truffles have influenced and affected the community and have become part of the agri-tourism movement, providing direct and material benefit to the local and wider community.

This tour seeks to strengthen international connections in the truffle industry, to establish new collaborations and to share knowledge. Participants will share and have the opportunity to present both scientific and horticultural experiences to further our understanding of truffle culture around the world. Delegates expected to attend from Australia and overseas.

The trip includes (also see more detailed draft itinerary at bottom of page):

  • Truffle orchard and facility tours;
  • Formal seminars with West Australian producers and scientists;
  • Focus on the science of truffle growing and the on-going research and development undertaken in WA, as well as the supply chain are covered; from inoculating trees and establishing orchards, irrigation practices, management of pests and diseases, to hunting and harvesting; including the training and handling of dogs, harvesting issues, with a special workshop discussing cleaning and grading, storage, packaging and transport.
  • Regional tourism experiences
  • Participation in Truffle Kerfuffle, the Australian Truffle Festival which celebrates the truffle season with an amazing weekend of food, wine and truffle experiences. 
  • Special dinners showcasing the local food culture, utilising regional produce, native Australian ingredients and of course, black truffle.
  • Includes: Transport, accommodation and most meals.




  • ACCOMMODATION: Two nights in Perth, one night in Margaret River and five nights in Manjimup.
  • INCLUSIONS: The field trip includes all accommodation, land transport during tour, most meals and some drinks. It does not include flights. Participants are responsible for making their own way to/from the Perth hotel at the start and end of the field trip.  Participants are responsible for expenses outside the stated itinerary, including additional refreshments and incidental on the ground expenses.
  • WHO WILL THIS TRIP APPEAL TO? This is an industry field study. Participants should have a genuine interest in the truffle industry and be willing to actively participate  in group sessions. 
  • ADULTS ONLY (18+)
  • WHAT TO PACK: The Field trip includes working farm visits so please bring protective footwear. The tour takes place in the Australian winter so bring warm clothing and wet weather gear. Events at Truffle Kerfuffle suit various levels of casual and smart dress. Please refer to individual event pages for more information. 
  • ACCESSIBILITY: Due to the nature of this tour we regret it is not currently wheelchair accessible.
  • WEATHER: This is an all weather event
  • ALLERGIES & INTOLERANCES: We will do our best to look after those with allergies and intolerances but you must tell us at time of booking. 
  • CANCELLATION: This field study is subject to a minimum participation levels which must be met by April 30th. If the tour is not full by this point, we reserve the right to cancel.
  • CHANGES TO ITINERARY: Alterations to the schedule of the field study tour may be subject to change and variation.

  • Monday 18th June:
    • Inbound travel to Perth, Western Australia at guests own arrangements. Guests to make own way to hotel. Free time to rest and explore.
    • Overnight accommodation in Perth included. Meals not included but recommendations to be provided.
  • Tuesday 19th June:
    • 7am Meet with other participants. Travel to Margaret River Region.
    • Regional tour including cultural and environmental experience.
    • Winery experience with tasting and meal.
    • Overnight in Margaret River with all meals included. 
  • Wednesday 20th June:
    • Travel to Manjimup. 
    • Meet Field Trip Truffle host, Anne Mitchell (Consultant Scientist and Truffle Grower, Manjimup Underground) on her Manjimup property. Official welcome, tour orchard, truffle hunt and grading preparation workshop. Followed by casual group dinner.
    • Overnight in Manjimup with all meals included. 
  • Thursday 21st June: 
    • Join Anne Mitchell again for an early morning truffle orchard tour and working hunt / study on 2nd longer established orchard.
    • Farm and produce tour.
    • Truffle Grading Workshop with Gavin Booth, Australian Truffle Traders
    • Private dining experience.
    • Overnight in Manjimup with all meals included. 
  • Friday 22nd June:

  • Monday 25th June:
    • Early morning travel to Perth. 
    • Accompanied portion of trip concludes. Free time to and explore Perth
    • Overnight accommodation in Perth included.  Lunch and dinner not included but recommendations provided.
  • Tuesday 26th June:
    • Check-out of hotel. Outbound travel from hotel and Perth at guests own arrangement.
